barrier-free education with miro

CHALLENGE

DNA, a Dutch community of Catholic primary and high schools in Alkmaar and Bergen, is committed to nurturing every child’s unique talents. They, five major educational boards – SaKS, Ronduit onderwijs, Sovon, PCC, and Jan Arentsz, have embarked on a collaborative venture. These institutions collectively believe in the need for a transformative approach to education. They envision “De Nieuwe Alkmaarse,” as this new educational system to create a smooth learning journey for cihldren from 4 to 18 years old, emphasizing that learning is in our DNA.

There’s a growing demand among children, teenagers, parents, teachers, educational professionals, and entrepreneurs for a different form of education. The challenge lies in determining where to start. What would this ‘new educational idea’ look like? Who could assist in its realization? What are the prerequisites? How can genuine collaboration be maintained? How can the initiative be planned and organized effectively? And importantly, how can they ensure they’re not reinventing the wheel?

Adding to this, SaKS had set a goal to launch a new educational concept titled DNA (De Nieuwe Alkmaarse) or “10/14 education” in 1.5 years. They faced the challenge of creating a project plan by summer 2022. This plan needed to align with the desires and needs of students, parents, school boards, and other stakeholders while ensuring it’s feasible for the 2024-2025 school year.

Education Transformation

SOLUTION

To address this challenge, a Design Sprint was proposed, involving 15 participants from 5 education boards. The sprint comprised the following phases:

  1. Preparation: Establishing the problem statement, planning dates, and introducing participants to Miro and the project program.
  2. First Online Session (3 hours): Understanding and exploring the current scenario.
  3. Fieldwork: Engaging in empathetic conversations with stakeholders and exploring trends in other schools or sectors. This phase also included a 1.5-hour online intervision session.
  4. Second Online Session (3 hours): Sharing findings and determining core questions from a stakeholder perspective.
  5. Third Online Session (3 hours): Brainstorming ideas and translating them into a concept.
  6. Fourth Online Session: Framing the concept for stakeholder validation.
  7. Fieldwork: Brief validation of the frames with stakeholders.
  8. Closing Online Session (3 hours): Discussing fieldwork findings and determining the direction for the project. The team then integrated their insights into the project plan format.

RESULT

Upon completion of the Design Sprint, the following outcomes were achieved:

  • The team gained firsthand experience of what can be accomplished in a short timeframe using STUDIO.WHY Design Thinking.
  • A project plan with validated directions was established for further development.
  • The team developed foundational skills in Design Thinking.
  • Strengthened team cohesion.
  • Introduction to new online tools.
  • Enhanced skills in innovation and entrepreneurial behavior.
  • Sparked curiosity within and around the school boards.
  • Acquired a methodical and practical process for an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Underwent an engaging, intensive, and educational experience.
  • Formulated the DNA Mission Statement, which promises a rich learning environment that challenges students to explore their interests and talents. This statement was derived from a Design Thinking process involving 20 interviews, resulting in over 100 insights, and culminating in the mission statement that serves as the foundation for the DNA 0-18 education system. The subsequent goal for 2023 is to develop an educational concept answering the question ‘how?’, encompassing curriculum development, learning environment, evaluation methods, pilot programs, and more.

This case showcases the power of Design Thinking in shaping the future of education and ensuring that every child can confidently and self-assuredly navigate the world.
