The quality of the air in many Dutch cities is quite poor. Dense population and traffic, including many mopeds, lead to a high level of particulate matter. What if we can make that pollution visible and use it to make civilians more aware? This was one of the challenges during the Gelderse Einsteinweek: How might we, by using technology, have young people contribute to air quality measuring network, so that it creates more insight for local governments? The challenge was focused on a particular neighbourhood in Arnhem, the former Red Light District, where nowadays many senior citizens and students live.
Two teams worked on this challenge during one entire week. They immersed in new technologies, had empathetic conversation with people that lived in the neighbourhood and found out that loneliness is a problem among elder people in the neighbourhood too. One team came up with the Led Light District-concept: free bikes in the quarter that student can use if they assist in social activities, like doing groceries for senior citizens next door. The bikes are equipped with sensors to measure air quality. The data collected is used to turn led lights on the bike red or green, depending on the quality, so it becomes visual what the air quality is. Also the data is collected and presented via the Internet, so both government officials als inhabitants can see what the air quality is.
This concept was the winning concept of the Gelderse Einsteinweek. As decision making took tool long in Arnhem, one of the members of the winning team investigated if the concept could be tested elsewhere. Utrecht gladly accepted the opportunity.
Now, a few years later, over 500 people participate in the project snuffelfiets (sniffer bike) that was made possible through the collaboration of various organizations. The solution is now available for other cities too. Watch the video.
