Province of Fryslan – happiness at work

CHALLENGE

For the in house Innovation Games we focused separately on two different target groups; the employee and the employer. Therefor we had two challenges that we quite similar.

How might we have the employees take daily initiative in their work happiness, so they come to work happy every day?

and

How might we as an organization ensure that people experience happiness at and in their work, so we become the best employer of the north?

Both challenges came from the perspective happiness is the main reason that people want to work for and stay with an organization, more than money. Internal research showed that the high percentage of sick leave was directly relatable to the work. Besides that the organization offers a variety of health and vitality tools/programs, which aren’t used by many people. Time to take action and make employees happy again.

SOLUTION

Instead of going top down, the organization decided it was time to ask the employees what they think. As STUDIO.WHY we combined this with external people to get a broader perspective. All of them were brought together in a 2 day hackathon inside of the provincial office and political rooms. Start the fires where they have impact.

2 teams worked on this challenge and 2 on a separate challenge focussed on work pressure. The 48 hour hackathon had a variety of energizer, tools, workshops and social moments, to really get the people into action.

RESULT

After two days of “hacking” the teams came up with a concept to increase happiness. Based on stakeholder and expert interviews they suggested a solution to get more insights into the employees welfare. Which helps to come up with tailor made solutions for people.
