Recycle used military clothing

CHALLENGE

The Dutch Army has many used uniforms waiting to be recycled. Throwing them in the shredder is an option, but the organization wondered if we could give the uniforms a better second life. STUDIO.WHY was asked to facilitate the quest for the Dutch ministry of Defence.

SOLUTION

During the Circular Innovation Games in Nijmegen, a team of international students took it upon them to explore various possibilities. The team visited the depot at a military base, spoke with a wide variety of people in the clothing business and took a deep dive into the existing demand for a more sustainable office at the base. The team applied the Dutch Design Deltas to solve this challenge.

RESULT

The team developed various solutions for the commissioner. One of them was to turn the uniforms info fabrics to make curtains, containing little bags to hold plants. This way the uniforms were reused and fostering the desire for a greener office environment, while contributing to less reverb. Now 1 million kilogram of clothing is returned. 35% is reused, 65% is recycled instead of being burnt.

"Currently, many low-quality products are made from our discarded clothing, such as wall insulation and car door trim. But the quality of our fibers is so good that you can do much more with them. So that seven-figure profit we are already making will only increase."
