Reduce travel movements with a nearby workplace

CHALLENGE

Rijkswaterstaat, a part of the Dutch Department of Infrastructure & Water Management, would like to utilize its office locations in a better way. At the same time, there was a desire to reduce travel in order to diminish the level of C02-pollution caused by travelling. Rijkswaterstaat DataLab has a lot of data regarding the use of offices and travel and wanted to use this data to contribute to this challenge. STUDIO.WHY was asked to organize a remote hackathon during the Covid-19-lockdown to look for solutions to reduce unnecessary travel.

SOLUTION

STUDIO.WHY gathered people with all different backgrounds to work on this remote hackathon. The teams worked on this challenge and participated in various masterclasses, workshops and fieldwork activities. As working remote together for several days might be quite something, the program was very varied. We mixed platforms, introduced VR, delivered a boody box in person and made sure that there was enough space to socialize too. As getting to know your teammates is an important factor to deliver great results.

RESULT

The teams pitched their solutions on our virtual stage in Fectar, a VR-platform. Colleagues from Rijkswaterstaat were invited to vote on the various solutions, as well as the Dragons. The combination of these tools and the use of the Dutch Design Deltas lead to a high energy event. After the hackathon we were asked to facilitate informal learning within the organization. The number of participants doubled and people loved to stay a little bit longer to network and hang our in our virtual karaoke bar.

Spatial Chat

"I experienced the power of remote hackathons with tools in virtual reality, miro and Spatial Chat. Loved the vibe!"
