Reduce waste caused by single-use exhibition stands

CHALLENGE

After an exhibition or trade show often a lot of waste remains at the venue. Most of it is related to the booths that were designed and manufactured just for this one occasion. RAI Amsterdam wondered how we could make this more sustainable. It became one of the challenges during the Event Industry Hackathon 2019:

How can we activate stand builders to design environmentally friendly booths for exhibitions?

SOLUTION

During a 24-hour hackathon two of the eight teams dedicated their energy to find solutions for this challenge. Guided by facilitators of STUDIO.WHY they developed a clear overview of the context by having empathetic conversations with various stakeholders. Also they got inspired by trends and emerging technologies, presented by various specialists and through desk research. In the evening the teams generated loads of ideas, boosting the energy level and making them decide not to take any sleep but continue to work on the concepts an validations during the night.

RESULT

The teams presented their concepts for the Dragons, like top-10 innovation influencer Gijs van Wulfen and investor Annemarie van Gaal. One of the concepts was that RAI Amsterdam not only rents space and services, but also a collection of standard modular booths, equipped with technology like hologram beamers and a combination of beamers and smart screens to change the atmosphere and information displayed in the booth. This way the booth itself is 100% reusable, costs for the use of the booth will drop and waste will be diminished.
